Do You Need a Content Agency, or Can You DIY It?

We lose work by answering this honestly, and we would rather do that than take on a client who should have kept it in-house.

Do it yourself when the bottleneck is ideas, not time

If someone on your team enjoys being on camera, understands the product, and has two spare hours a week, they will outperform an agency that has to learn your business from scratch. Buy a tripod and a clip mic and start.

Hire out when these are true

The numbers change once the work has to happen every week regardless of how busy you are.

  • Content stops the moment your week gets busy, which is most weeks.
  • You have footage sitting unedited because editing is the part nobody wants.
  • You are paying three freelancers and coordinating them yourself.
  • You know what to say but freeze on how to open, so nothing gets filmed.

The real cost of DIY is not the camera

A phone shoots well enough. What costs you is the scripting, the editing hours, and the consistency, and those are the parts that quietly stop after month two. Count the hours honestly before deciding it is free.

The hybrid most businesses land on

You film raw clips on your phone during the week, we script, edit, caption, and schedule. It costs less than full production and keeps the realness that makes owner-filmed content work.

Real examples

Bad line, good line.

Most people write

"We will start posting once we are less busy."

Say this instead

"Ramesh films on Tuesday mornings. It is in his calendar."

Most people write

Three freelancers coordinated over three separate chats.

Say this instead

One person, or one team, accountable for the month.

Full example

Worked example: the honest hour count

01Add up the real hours your last five posts took, including editing and reshoots.
02Multiply by four to get a month, then price that time at what your own hour is worth.
03If the number is higher than a production fee, you already have your answer.

You film

Daily footage nobody else can capture.

Agency edits

Cutting, captions, sound, delivery.

Shared plan

One call a month to decide the next batch.

The cheapest arrangement is usually you filming and someone else finishing.

The cheapest content is the content that actually gets made.

Do this week

Three things you can do now.

01Count the hours your last five posts really took, including editing.
02Decide who on your team owns filming, by name, not by intention.
03If nothing got posted last month, that is your answer.
